A Tuesday morning blaze destroyed the office of Doctor G. W. Pirtle, with investigators tracing the cause to an undetermined mire of unknown origin. The incident left the physician without a workspace and prompted emergency responders to secure the scene.
Wooley Coal Company actively engages in sinking a coal shaft near Paxton as crews work on extending the mine’s depth and potential output.
Fire at 2:06 A M destroyed the Pirtle building and damaged Curtner Drug Co and nearby shops. Loss is estimated around 87 000 with insurance covering most structures and contents. quick response saved some contents and a barber shop. Paxton to gain a new coal mine operated by Woolley Coal Company with twin tipple near Ed McCammon farm. cost about 100 000, modern steel tipples and concrete works planned.
Mr and Mrs W E Scott visited relatives in Vincennes Saturday night and Sunday morning. Miss Faye Bartlet of Freelandville visited her cousin Miss Cora Ferguson Monday and Tuesday.
Thursday afternoon last week hostess Miss Aurelia Hisinger entertained with a house party for Mrs. Emory Smith of Indianapolis. The event featured fancy needlework, music, and summer refreshments with guests including Mesdames Smith, Dobson, Robbins, and several Misses and out of town visitors Katherine Simpson of Vincennes and Irene Ramsdeil of New Albany.
Shake Emmett Shake son of Mr and Mrs J H Shake longtime Carlisle residents now living six miles northeast of Carlisle married Miss Lola Wilkerson of Turman township Friday afternoon in a Carlisle M E parsonage service conducted by Rev Samuel Reid. The bride is the daughter of Mrs P J Martin near Graysville. They will live with the groom's parents for now.
Ed Cleveland and family and Mrs. Matilda Myers of Princeton visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Stoddard.
Turner Johnson of Indianapolis visited from Sunday morning to Wednesday to see friends and relatives. Charles Kerkhot Ralph Smith Clyde Willis and Edwin Sehn attended the motorcycle races at Terre Haute on Sunday.
