New Ticket Law Sets Higher Train Fares and Ends Penny Change

A new law effective Saturday abolishes penny change on railroad tickets. It limits passenger travel within the state to at least five cents and not more than two cents per mile, with fractions counted up to a full mile. If a passenger misses a 30 minute predeparture ticket option, carriers may add ten cents. Carlisle lines show fare changes versus old rates.

Squire Tompkins Show Company Presents Play in Oaktown

The Squire Tompkins Show Co. performed Squire Tompkins Daughter in Oaktown last Thursday before a small audience. The Carlisle troupe had previously staged the piece in Merci Dugger and Oaktown and then decided to disband due to lack of financial viability.

George W. Smith born March 4 1851 in Pendleton County West Virginia died April 7 1909 in Gill Township Sullivan County Indiana at 58 years 1 month 3 days due to epileptic convulsions. He married Mary Catherine Roebuck who died January 1888 leaving Lydia and Jared. He married Elizabeth Johnson September 1902 and they lived near Jeffersonville Ohio where Layina born November 1893 and Frank born March 1896. Funeral by Rev William F Russell burial in I O O F cemetery.

Eighth Grade Examination Set for Carlisle Public School

The second examination for eighth grade pupils in Haddon township schools to graduate from common branches will be held at the Carlisle public school building on Saturday April 17 1909. Those taking the exam should bring ink pen and manuscript. The examination starts at 8 00 a m.

Elliott Roberts spent Easter in Evansville with his aunt Mrs. Peter Goelz and relatives. Fred Hill traveled to Chicago to resume work as a decorator. Miss Edna Johnson visited Sullivan on Saturday. Mrs. James A. Wilson visited Terre Haute to see her daughter Mrs. M. K. Curry and family. Dr. Wm. A. Lisman was in Terre Haute Friday and Saturday. Farm Home Burns Near Here Damages Samuel Weever Farm

Fire destroyed Samuel Weever’s two story home twelve miles southeast of here in the early hours Friday. The blaze, likely caused by a defective furnace, left the building valued at about $1 000.

Mrs. William B. Shepherd and her daughter Helen spent Friday in Terre Haute. Mrs. Elizabeth Tinkham returned home in Terre Haute Saturday after attending to business matters here.
