Attorney Milton A. Haddon and wife of Sullivan spent Sunday visiting the former's parents Mr and Mrs David Haddon. Rev L V Barbie pastor of the Carlisle Christian church went to Bloomington Monday for a Disciples of Christ convention nearby.
J R Egloff drowned after falling from a gasoline launch on the Wabash near Oaktown on a Friday afternoon. Companion William Woodrum swam to safety. Egloff’s body found two and a half hours later near Wolfe Hill. Coroner Beckes opened the inquest. Egloff left a wife and five children.
The Rush Medical College Class of 1890 tied to the medical department of Chicago University held its 20th anniversary reunion on March 28, 1910. Dr. G W Pirtle of Carlisle attended from the area, having practiced medicine without missing a day except for medical society duties.
The Indianapolis News reports Representative Cullop of Indiana tried to recommit the pension bill to add a $1 a day pension for veterans with 90 days or more service. Representative Mann of Chicago argued against the motion and Speaker Cannon sustained the point. A separate Sherwood dollar a day bill may be pursued but is unlikely to succeed.
Prof. Grover Clayton spent Sunday with his parents near Paxton. Mrs. Thomas Williams and daughter Aerial left Saturday for Fontanet and Indianapolis to visit relatives. Louis L. Roberts arrived Friday to spend the spring vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Roberts. Louis is a student at Wabash College, Crawfordsville.
Easter services across Carlisle drew record crowds. The M. E. Sunday School reported 246 attendees and over $22 donated. the Christian Sunday School had 221 attendees with $8 raised. tubes of rose bulbs were given away. The Presbyterian School drew about 60, and Holiness Christian Church had about 20. Evening programs were held at Christian, Presbyterian and Methodist churches.
The 1909 Report of the State Board of Forestry is available free from the State Forester in Indianapolis. It covers methods for establishing and maintaining a farmer’s woodlot, tree species choices, spacing, pruning, and reforestation of eroded land. It also highlights the Reforesting the Hills of Southern Indiana and Field Work by the State Forest Experiment Station.
George Wise, a coal miner for Carlisle Coal and Clay Co., had a case dismissed in Squire Kirkham's court in Sullivan after initially being found guilty in Justice Cowle's court for opening a can of powder with a pick. The case was moved when the Deputy Prosecutor was absent.
Constable Johnson and deputy Martin Jenkins of Carlisle arrested Hosea Dunbar on a board bill beating charge in Oaktown Monday. Jenkins was later arrested on an old drunk and disorderly charge, pleaded guilty, and fined eight dollars and sixty five cents in costs. Record dated March 24.
A Mothers Meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Will L. Rogers on Tuesday afternoon April 5. A large attendance is expected as blocks for the name quilt come in. Mesdames Will and Carl Gobin lead the program and all interested mothers are invited.
Wm F Dodge book keeper for Carlisle Coal and Clay Co and Ivan J Lester conducted business in Sullivan on Monday. Mrs J H Gilliland spent Monday in Terre Haute. Misses Ruby Leach and Marie Russell of Sullivan visited Friday night and Saturday morning, guest of Miss Flo Courrier, and attended the Easter dance at the Pilmer and Ridgway hall.
