The Chicago Democrat reports the suicide of George W. Green, a banker and murder convict, in his jail cell at 4 AM on Sunday. He hanged himself with a cord after tying his hands and a wall note cited by the paper. Green had been in jail five months awaiting a second trial for murdering his wife and left a pamphlet remark about genius and ruin. His estate is estimated between 30000 and 40000 dollars. His family contends the will was made while insane and will challenge it. Green reportedly wore most of his garments during confinement, never removing much clothing. This tragedy is described as one of the city’s most appalling crimes.
The Philadelphia North American reports Lieutenant Liene does not deprive General Scott of full rank as Major General, with brevet promotions to determine seniority. No contest arises between Generals Wool and Twiggs for succession. Wool remains senior at Brigadier General, while Twiggs is brevetted Major General by dates Sept 23 1848 and Feb 25 respectively.
