Beech chaired a September 9 hearing in Soda Springs where about twenty speakers including locals, businesspeople, hunters, and fishermen largely supported proceeding with the phosphate project. He noted residents want wildlife habitat protections and welcomed firms’ wildlife safeguards and studies.
Senator Jim McClure announced Senate Public Works approval of a Lower Snake River Fish and Wildlife Compensation Plan aimed at restoring salmon and steelhead runs in Idaho. The plan includes four hatchery sites McCalls Spring Hagerman Powell Ser Loto Pass Mackay and reviews site viability. action pending in the House.
Nurse Preparation for Health Care Teaching of the Elderly is a continuing education program for nurses administrators social workers and others. It will be held Thursday November 18 at Caribou Memorial Hospital Soda Springs with registration 8:30 9 a m and sessions 9 a m to 12 noon and 1 to 4 30 p m at each location. The program has no registration fee. It aims to teach health education skills to nurses and provide information about social services for Idaho elderly. It seeks to improve communication among nurses in long term care facilities public health and related facilities.
Idaho Mining Association Executive Secretary A. J. Teske testified at a Holiday Inn hearing on the draft Environmental Impact Statement for phosphate development. He argued wildlife impact sections rely on assumptions and urged an economic impact analysis to counterbalance potential costs and unemployment.
Cleon Skousen, former FBI agent and Salt Lake City police chief, will discuss Our American Heritage and the Constitution at 8 p.m. in the Soda Springs High School Auditorium. The talk kicks off a 28-hour four week constitutional seminar starting October 29, sponsored by the Adult Education Program.

The Southeast Idaho Art Guild announces an art show at the Presbyterian Church Annex in Sodan on Friday October 8 and Saturday October 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit features water color demonstrations by Steven J. Strebel and includes crafts for sale. A pre-show meeting is planned on Thursday October 7 to prepare.
Idaho Fish and Game releases a 44 page critical review of the southeast Idaho phosphate mining environmental impact statement. It cites omissions, errors and misleading wording about fish life, streams, water quality, and potential dam failures.

Soda Springs High School will present the musical Bye Bye Birdie from November 18 to 23. The show follows a rock and roll star about to be drafted, told with satirical insight into everyday life.

A final program in a series on land use titled Current Issues in Land Use will be held Thursday September 30. The event includes a 7 15 p m discussion at the Cablevision Office led by moderator Michael Leavitt and an 8 p m Channel 10 TV program featuring Dr LaMar Bollinger Jim Kennedy and Don Burnett. Participants may call in questions.
A stake wide volleyball clinic led by Yvonne Spar row is set for September 25 at the Stake Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All young women ages 12 to 18 are invited, with ward Young Women presidents, advisers, and volunteers asked to attend. Light refreshments will be served at noon.
Harvest Vacation starts September 25 with school resuming October 11. If storms delay harvest, school may be recalled and days added to the end of the period. Listen to KBRY Radio for storm updates and resumption announcements. After the harvest, no excused absences will be allowed and farmers urged to seek non school help.
