Local high school students compete in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy program. State winners earn a Washington tour and potential national honors with prize money totaling 22500. Local prizes range from 30 to 10 in merchandise gift certificates.

Soda Springs Idaho Stake Conference Adopts Dual Sessions

The Soda Springs Idaho stake will hold its September conference in two sessions due to expected attendance. Ward members are assigned to 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. sessions on September 25 at the Stake Center, with Elder J Thomas Fyans present. A leadership meeting on September 24 includes stake and ward officials. The stake presidency will be reorganized following President Willis R. Burton’s move to Blackfoot.

Emergency Feed Program runs Aug 24 1977 to May 15 1978. Eligibility based on drought related loss. all forage and feed grain production counted to assess need. Applications at County Office. Also notes 1977 crop barley and oat loan rates increased to 1.62 per bushel for barley and 1.12 per bushel for oats.

Annual Mining Assoc Meeting in Challis

The Central Idaho Mining Association will hold its annual meeting in Challis at the Legion Hall on September 24 at 2 p.m. Jim Nash of the Prospectors and Miners and a coordinating speaker from the Tri-County Cattlemen's Association will discuss road closures, with another speaker from the Wood Women Association addressing wilderness withdrawal areas. Each speech lasts about 30 minutes, followed by questions and answers.

Governor John Evans voiced support for an automatic crash protection system for auto occupants during demonstrations of an air bag equipped car and a passive safety belt system. He indicated there will be much discussion about the safety features and their adoption.

PTO Meeting Sets 1977-78 Goals and Projects

Close to 100 parents and teachers from District 150 attended Back-to-School night at the Jr High. PTO President Pat Keller opened with the 1977-78 board slate: Kathy Linh Irise Lott Marlene Rasmussen and Jackie Winward with Karen Sorenson as an excused member. Marlene Rasmussen outlined projects including J D Tags movie nights a talent show poster contest and a Read-a-thon to support schools. The group aims to fund education through volunteering and parental involvement.

Pocatello Doctor Named Top Family Physician of 1977

Dr. Sam J. W. Romeo of Pocatello named one of the nine Family Doctors of the Year 1977 by Good Housekeeping and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He practices in Southeast Idaho serving Lava Hot Springs Downey Soda Springs and Montpelier with the Southeast Idaho Family Medical and Educational Services. The feature notes his five years in Pocatello and lists other honorees from multiple states.

Chamber hears on Forest Service inventories and county EMTs

Susan Murphy from the Farm Bureau outlined Forest Service RARE II inventory plans that could affect 60 percent of Idaho land, framing areas as potential wilderness. County EMTs, 40 in all with 31 in Soda Springs, donate 62,000 hours yearly. training totals 70 hours for EMTs. Della Brown described fracture care during the Soda Springs Chamber meeting.

Thatcher School Back To School Night Sept 13

Thatcher Elementary held its annual back to school night on September 13. Principal James Bingham welcomed parents and teachers and highlighted support from the Pro organization. PTO elected Ruth Tingey vice president and Tamara White secretary. Ann Randall and Gay Smith received awards. The first grade won a ten dollar classroom prize for most attendees.
