NRA Hunter Safety Course Taught in Soda Springs

The NRA safety course at Soda Springs Junior High School enrolled about 66 youths aged 12 to 13. Instructors Grant Nelson and team led written exams and supervised live ammunition firing, with sessions spanning three to four weeks and seven or eight meetings. Nelson urged broader participation next year to expand safety education and avoid mandatory licensing in Idaho.

Holy Cross Student Chosen for National Nursing Meet

Kathleen Petersen, a junior at Holy Cross School of Nursing in Salt Lake City, has been selected to represent Holy Cross Hospital at the National Student Nurses Association convention in Atlantic City New Jersey from June 11 to 15. Six Utah nursing students will fly to Atlantic City, then tour New York City and the World's Fair before returning June 18.

Soda Springs Ladies Golf Club wins at Pocatello invitational

Seven Soda Springs golfers attended the Highland Golf Course event in Pocatello last Wednesday. Doris Hendrickson helped the first place team while five other Soda Springs members shared second place along with trips and prizes. Also noted is a visit from Mike of Butte to nearby families in Conda and Soda Springs.

Water Safety Instructors Review Course in Lava Hot Springs

A three day water safety review course runs June 9 10 and 11 at the Spa Pool Lava Hot Springs from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm under director Max Mason. Transportation is provided and participants should meet at City Square on Tuesday June 9 at 9:00 am and bring lunch.

Soda Springs Girls Represent at Syringa State

Eloise Panting and Elaine Smith from Soda Springs High School attend the 8th Annual Syringa Girls State on the College of Idaho campus Caldwell. Chosen by the Blackburn-Call American Legion Auxiliary in March, they will run mythical city and county governments, attend government classes, and participate in a mock legislative session. They return home Saturday.

Auxiliary Names Essay Winners Named in Legion Contest

Winners of the American Legion Auxiliary essay contest were announced by Mrs Russell Tigert. Awards went to Chet Hopkins Lonnie Nichols Vivian Christman for grades 5-6 and Helene Irving Paul O'Brien Jackie Dupin for grades 7-9 with prizes $5 $3 and $1. First place essays advance to state competition.

SSHS Students Honored At Awards Assembly

Soda Sprigs High School honored students across more than ten departments at an awards assembly led by Superintendent Tippets. Band recipients included Merticia Christman and Steve Warner with district certificates. trumpets, percussion, drum-majorette pins, and band letters were awarded to several students. Choir members and soloists were recognized with district festival and outstanding member awards. Typing I awards covered high speeds, with intramural honors going to Ron Stiles. Science and mathematics recognized Jerry Young and Dorin Balls. Athletics honored top players in football, basketball, wrestling, track, and intramural leadership, with Steve Freeman named next year’s intramural director.

Bancroft Man Elected Lions District Governor

Parley L. Schenk of Bancroft was elected District Governor of Lions District 38 at the Sun Valley convention. The district covers 29 Lions Clubs and about 1176 members in southeastern Idaho. Schenk and his wife Neomia will attend the international Lions convention in Toronto July 9 to 11. He has held multiple club offices and serves as farmer rancher in Lund. They have seven children two of whom are in service and ten grandchildren.

Preston Golfers to Play Here Sunday

Soda Springs golfers will host the Preston team in an inter city match on the local course this Sunday June 7. Coffee and rolls will be served at 8:00 a.m. with tee off at 9:00 a.m. All members of the Soda Springs Golf Club are urged to participate.

Fifty nine lettermen were recognized. Awards went to Darla Gill Evelyn Hubbard and Alan Peterson for school paper. Home Economics winners included Darla Gill Betty Crocker Homemaker Award and Linda Petersen outstanding senior award. Cheerleaders pins awarded to Billy Harns Linda Bevins. Letters to Sandra Nelson Jeannette Nelson. Trophies earned by the school are on display at the JC Penney store window.

Central Farmers Fertilizer Plant Sold to El Paso Gas Co

The Central Farmers Fertilizer Co plant in Georgetown canyon was sold to El Paso Natural Gas Products Co for about 23 million dollars. Matt Lattig said El Paso will operate the plant soon and may add facilities. 60 workers remain from a peak of 400. The firm plans phosphate fertilizer production for the 1985 spring season and may use Bear Lake and Caribou county mining leases as phosphate ore reserves.

Drivers Ed Course Enrollment Meeting Friday

All students interested in a summer driver education course should meet in Room 5 at Soda Springs High School at 10 o clock Friday morning June 5. Students must be 14 years or older to enroll. Specific class arrangements will be made at the Friday meeting.

Local Nurses Association Quilt Winner Named in Soda Springs

Denise Sturm of Soda Springs won a quilt in a drawing held Saturday May 30 by the Practical Nurses Association chapter. Proceeds fund the Idaho State Practical Nurses Convention to be hosted in Soda Springs June 16 18 with Donna Reed drawing the winning ticket in Caribou County Hospital.
