Dry Feed Formulas Boost Fish Output
Idaho Fish and Game reports a decade of growth in hatchery trout production from 17 million fish in 1956 to 28 million in 1966, with 3.47 million planted last year. A 1959 switch to dry feed formulas eliminated costly wet meat diets and refrigeration, cutting the per pound planted cost from $1 to 58 cents. The department uses an open, bid-driven dry feed formula since 1963, detailing ingredients and vitamins and supplying hatcheries.
