Idaho lawmakers push a state wide consolidation study to reduce districts and improve education quality. Cobbs of Boise notes funding and a 12 member commission would oversee hearings, with a 1971 transition and a review by the State Board of Education.
The Fifth District A-2 basketball tournament resumes at American Falls with Soda Springs meeting American Falls and Preston facing Snake River. The night opener features the Cards against the Beavers, both with one loss, with elimination on the line. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
Melbourne Archibald 40 of Tremonton Utah died Tuesday afternoon when his car was struck by a Union Pacific engine at Ivins crossing eight miles west of Soda Springs. Archibald owned Archibald Lease Co. in Tremonton and was visiting farmers. The train, traveling 57 mph, left the scene with the vehicle 90 feet from the crossing.
Postmaster General Winton Blount informs Grace post office official Gail Ray that bids will be invited Feb 20 to March 7, 1969 for a new postal facility on a site at Main and First Street North Grace. The lot about 12 500 square feet supports 1 949 square feet interior space plus 204 square foot platform and 8 600 square feet parking. Soda Springs Community Theatre opens tryouts Sunday March 2 at 5 pm in Soda Springs High School music room. A local note teases beauty as the gal who finished last in a beauty contest.
North Gem holds a commanding position in the Sixth District A-4 basketball tournament at Terreton with two straight wins. Clark County meets Mackay tonight as the loser is eliminated and the winner advances to Friday to face North Gem. A Cowboys victory could wrap up the district title. a loss pushes the final to Saturday night. Game times are 8:00 p.m. Fans can read game reports on the inside sports page.
Display hours set for March 8 from 2 to 7 p.m. and March 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Caribou Memorial Hospital. Details of completion and opening announced in next week’s Sun.
Winners in the Soda Springs Chamber of Commerce Turkey Drawing held last Saturday February 22 include Don Anderson Marie Skinner Don Atkinson Roy Walton and Russell Sibbett. The final drawing will be this Saturday with five more turkeys or hams awarded. Register at Chamber member stores to be eligible and no purchase is required.
Mildred Dilling, famed harpist and owner of a vast harp collection, appears Sunday at 3 pm to close the season. She tours internationally and educates audiences about harps from many nations while promoting Community Concert memberships at the high school auditorium.
Three suspects including two juveniles and an adult were arrested in a burglary at the Ponderosa Tavern north of Soda Springs. Entry was by breaking a window and police recovered seven cases of beer and two and a half cartons of cigarettes. The juvenile pair from Preston and the adult from Preston face court action. the adult is held in Montpelier on another charge.
The Farm Bureau Safety Poster Contest final judging runs this week with Thatcher Grace and Bancroft posters scored Thursday and Friday awards in each school. Soda Springs and Grays Lake posters judged Friday with prizes Monday. County judging in Soda Springs, state contest in Boise. Leaders thank teachers for cooperation.
The Soda Springs Junior High School Wrestling Tournament draws six teams Grace North Gem Malad Preston Bear Lake and Soda Springs. Action begins Friday March 7 at 3 30 PM with semifinals and finals to follow that evening.
The Soda Springs event features a 100 mile cross country race at 9 30 Saturday starting from Lynn Bells ranch and finishing at Stampede grounds with two fuel stops and checkpoints. A Sunday rally at the Christensen ranch Enoch Valley includes a 10 mile race speed oval and a Powder Puff Derby with points toward the West Yellowstone Roundup.
The Soda Springs Woman's Service Club sponsors a new physical fitness class starting March 5. Ten 1 4 hour sessions cost $3. Coach Elliott is the instructor. Interested individuals should contact Beverly Robinson promptly.
Advance adult reserved seats are $1.50 for the tournament. Student seats cost 75 cents, with junior high students included. The schedule repeats the Saturday times for all activities.
