Area Hit by Cold Snap

The report explains a bitter cold snap with temperatures dipping to 10 below zero overnight and thermometers in Soda Springs showing readings from -8 to -12. Bybee ranch near Soda Springs recorded -15, with a slight rise to 12 above on Tuesday before sinking to minus 9 Tuesday night.

Cowboys Now Undefeated After Two-Night Stand

North Gem Cowboys remain undefeated after a two night doubleheader at Arimo beating Madison High 47-41 and Rigby 55-53. Rigby beat Marsh Valley 62-29 Friday. Madison beat Marsh Valley 50-25 Saturday. Guidinger scored 22 to edge Dan Zundel for scoring honors. Zundel had 21. North Gem, a Class A school, plays AA this year while the others compete in AAA. Next game Friday versus Glenns Ferry at Bancroft.

State Officers Visit County Cancer Group

The Caribou County Unit of the American Cancer Society hosted state officers at a December 6 meeting in Grace. Clayton Rich and Marge Schlotterbeck outlined the Year around Crusade and Seven Cancer Danger Signals, urging public education and use of available films.

Caribou County Leads Idaho Voter Turnout In 1960

A state survey shows nearly 95 percent of eligible Idaho voters registered for the 1960 general election and 83.3 percent of registrants voted. Caribou County saw 85.9 percent turnout of its 4,327 registered voters with 2,858 ballots cast, while Jerome County led the state at 99 percent turnout. County registration changes varied, with Ada County ranking 40th at 74.9 percent turnout.

Soda Springs Opens Season With Win At Cokeville

Tom Scheffel scored 14 as Soda Springs beat Cokeville 38 to 29 in the season opener at Cokeville. A fourth quarter burst erased a two point deficit as Soda Springs claimed victory in their first varsity game for most players. Neil Fulton led Cokeville with 13 rebounds and Brent Roberta top scored for Cokeville with 12. Soda Springs heads to Montpelier for next game December 7.

Santa Claws visit and highway marker plans in Idaho

Grace Santa Claus will appear Saturday at 1:00 pm to hand out candy to children, followed by a free show at 2:00 pm sponsored by the Grace Business Men’s Association. Four of Idaho’s nine new historic highway markers will be installed near Soda Springs and Montpelier next summer, with texts prepared by the State Historical Society and locations chosen by the Highway Department.

Soda Springs Christmas Lighting Contest prizes set

The city sponsors a Christmas Lighting Contest with first second and third prizes in each category for residences and returning winners. Judging occurs Friday December 16 after 6 30 p m with winners announced December 22 in the Caribou County Sun. Grace Red Devils beat Rockland 52 48 in a non conference opener. Lynn Winterbottom led with nine rebounds and Craig Wilker emerged as a strong addition. Grace then defeated Aberdeen 52 48 to move to 2 0 in district play as free throws decided the outcome.

Names drawn for free turkeys in Soda Springs

Winners of the turkeys given away Saturday by the Soda Springs merchants were Tom Phelps, Lee Nelson, Virginia Evans, Glenya Hawker and Cate Yost Bancroft. Legion Auxiliary Elects Officers for Soda Springs Chapter

A Soda Springs American Legion Auxiliary special meeting elected and installed officers for the coming year led by District President Mabel Rawson. New officers are Nora Shuler president Maizie Porter vice president Hazel Blackburn second vice president Doris Balls secretary Betty Bergen treasurer Marjorie Croney chaplain Alease Largulliere sergeant at arms and Mary Jane Lau historian. The next meeting is Monday Dec 12 with a pot luck supper. Members are asked to bring a gift for the Yank who gave and volunteers may leave gifts in local boxes for hospitalized veterans during December.
