Council rejects downtown housing hotel plan in San Juan Capistrano
The San Juan Capistrano City Council voted to indefinitely stall a plan that would allow a 136 room Hilton Hotel and 30 residences on 3.18 acres at the Historic Town Center. The decision surprised a packed chamber and prompted a protest as supporters of the project expressed disappointment.

Matriarch of O Neill family dies at 97 in California
Marguerite Avery, matriarch of the O Neill lineage that developed Mission Viejo and surrounding areas, died July 22 at 97. A devout Catholic who raised six years as a single mother, she helped found First Century Families and was the last living attendee of the group's 1938 luncheon. Her California roots run deep with ties to Rancho Santa Margarita and notable street names bearing her family name.
