Saddleback Valley Christian School appeals a Planning Commission decision approving a 30,400 square foot multi purpose building. City Council will meet at 7 p.m. April 15 at City Hall to review the case. Information line 443-6300.
Monsignor Paul Martin will receive the Mayor's Award for 2003 Educator of the Year from the City Council on Tuesday for his community contributions. He has served at Mission Basilica over 25 years and is a local Mission history consultant and expert.
After hours of discussion the Planning Commission postponed a recommendation on the 126 home Honeyman Ranch project off Rancho Viejo Road north of Ortega for a couple weeks to allow more review of traffic and other issues. Residents voiced opinions with most living near the land for decades supporting the proposal while a few warned of increased traffic in a congested town. Sal Scarantino, a neighboring property owner, said the project would be less harmful than alternatives and praised the developer Grabie for addressing concerns.
About 500 people packed the San Clemente Community Center for a Caltrans and California High Speed Rail Authority workshop on south Orange County rail plans. With no formal agenda, residents debated routes around information boards, many opposing a beachside double track and preferring preservation of the beach, while San Juan Capistrano leaders attended among attendees from Dana Point.
Capistrano Unified School District hosted over 160 informational meetings to discuss adding grades six through eight at Ambuehl and San Juan elementary schools. District spokesman David Smollar said studies of K-8s in Irvine and elsewhere suggest academic advantages and overcrowding relief. The plan targets the 2004-05 year with current fourth and lower grade students affected, and Arroyo Vista in Rancho Santa Margarita also under consideration.
