Terrible storm devastates St Louis area and river towns

A severe hurricane struck on the 8th with South East winds. Six men died on Bloody Island and fifty two were wounded. Lyles and houses collapsed. The St Louis elevator and the Mollie Able steamer suffered heavy damage. The storm extended through Morgan Isl. and Phelps counties with widespread destruction and loss.

Rail road iron sold for Cape Girardeau line

Senator Green showed a letter from ex Governor Fletcher stating that twenty five miles of the Cape Girardeau and State Line Railroad snow iron is now purchased and delivery to Cape Girardeau will begin as soon as transport arrangements are complete. The contract will be carried out beyond doubt. Thanks are due to Representative Sanford for the report of state superintendent of public schools and to Senators Schurz and Blair and J. R. McCormick for public favors.
