The Texas Boundary and the Rio Grande Debate
A Charleston Mercury excerpt discusses Texan claims to the Rio Grande boundary, tracing policy from 1836 through Polk and Taylor eras. It cites the 1840s annexation framework, Mexican treaty maps, and war aims to confirm Texas sovereignty over lands along the river from its mouth to source, with broader implications for California and the Southwest.
