Grain cutting has begun in the Canora district with barley already harvested. Crops look strong and are ripening fast, aiming to boost Saskatchewan as The Bread Basket of the Empire. The Winnipeg Free Press notes widespread grain readiness and favorable weather across the region.
Census bulletin reports preliminary Canada 1916 wheat yield 28.10 bushels per acre with 1 208,700 harvested acres in five western provinces and Ontario 2,080,000 bushels from 132,000 acres. Alberta fall wheat 6,226,000 bushels from 2,? acres. Hay and clover yields per acre around 1.0 ton. Alfalfa 1.71 tons per acre. Springsown crops show strong results with beans and oats near 88 percent of standard. Potatoes and turnips above 90 percent. overall crop condition above 80 percent standard.
In Canora on Saturday August 1 1915 Mr and Mrs J B Malatomm are noted with a wedding or social event. The entry mentions a deugheet and references local residents attending or hosting. Details are fragmentary but indicate a small community gathering or celebration in Canora.
The Provincial Agriculture Department notes favorable conditions with no hail damage and harvest starting in many districts by August 10 and general by the 16th. The Humo Journal reports Dr D B Neely member of Parliament for Humboldt is en route to the front. He has joined the army with the rank of captain and will be attached to the 10th Canadian Mounted Rifles for training at Camp Hughes Manitoba.
