The first annual oratorical contest for a $25 prize hosted at the First Presbyterian church drew eight high school contestants from Canon City and South Canon. In Canon City, Colorado, Indian pottery and relics are found along the mesa and at Fremont Peak. A water jar unearthed by Miss Carrie Jackson shows ancient manufacture, with a preserved fabric fragment. Archaeologists may determine whether Ute or earlier peoples created the artifacts.
