Strawberry Crop Boosts Canon City Cash flow

The community expects at least 35 000 to 36 000 crates of berries from Canon City farms with prices ranging from 3.50 down to 1.40 and back to 1.60. Average growers plan 150 to 300 crates each, led by Bedderwood stock, as farmers expand small plots into larger patches along Lincoln Park with notes on individual growers and acreage.

Clean Up the Old Town Tuesday Event

Town volunteers urged by the mayor to dedicate Tuesday June 20 to cleaning up yards and vacant lots. Residents were asked to remove weeds, repair fences, and improve curb appeal to make the town look neat and inviting.

Methodist Church to Build Big Addition in Canon

The Methodist church plans a large addition raising seating from 600 to 1200 and moving the parsonage to 1008 Greenwood avenue. Cost estimated at 12000 to 15000 dollars, making it the citys largest auditorium and about twice the size of the opera house. The project follows rapid growth with 850 members and 565 Sunday attendance last week.

Sidewalk bicycle riders under city ordinance crackdown

Reports show enforcement of a city ordinance banning riding bicycles on sidewalks. Judge Minor fined several violators including Lois Nichola and Dr J W Cannon, with costs and some remissions. Officers are vigilant and random riders may be fined. public sidewalks remain watched by police.

High Water Destroys Island Garden and Strains Canon

Arkansas river floods sweep Canon and nearby areas causing loss of homes and land. Island garden of J. S. Rowe is destroyed, and several houses along Tenth Street face collapse or submersion. Weekend crowds fill Main Street venues

A Saturday night scene draws large crowds as Canon showcases a well attended event. Shops report heavy business through about ten o'clock with main streets crowded near Fifth and Main. The bustle resembles a busy tourist area, with long waits and packed sidewalks.

Boys Run Off With Bicycles From Victor

Two boys from Victor rented bicycles from Robert Mattoon and did not return. Sheriff Esser followed them toward Victor and the Victor marshal arrested them on arrival Saturday. They posted bond to appear next Monday. Names are Blake Hall and Willie Shaeffer.

Some Successions for Berry Growers

Canon berries do not reach the city market in top condition. Overwatering and improper irrigation are common issues. Many new growers lack irrigation knowledge, while veterans may neglect it. Berries should be planted and cared for so the fruit does not get wet during irrigation. Irrigation should occur after four p.m.

Berry picking and packing standards in morning hours

Berries should not be picked in the heat of the day. All picking should occur before ten in the morning whenever possible. Some growers neglect packing quality. A grower with a strong reputation for berry quality and packing can typically command a higher price than standard market quotes.

Trial of Joe Walton for keeping open after midnight

On Wednesday of last week Joe Walton appeared before Judge Minos charged with keeping open after 12 o'clock. The bartender testified he and a friend were in the saloon after midnight and drank beer but no sale was proved. Walton was fined 50 dollars with costs, but 40 dollars were remitted.

Believe There Is Money in Chickens Hoyt Brothers Pioneering

Hoyt brothers on Sherman avenue Lincoln Park run a chicken ranch with nearly 1000 birds including new rose comb White Manoreas variety. They expect about $100 a month in earnings with a good plant and 1000 mature birds. The Chieftain The Globe Democrat and Tre Rexon pay one year $2.15.

South Canon Council Adopts Ordinances and Orders Work

South Canon board meets with all members present except R B Thompson on sick list. D OC Jackling requests time to begin waterworks, to be reviewed June 18 at a special meeting. Sanitation improved under B F Meneféle. alleys and private property cleaned. Ordinances 46 and 47 read, adopted and published. Mayor Smythe volunteers to lead river bank strengthening, work to start immediately. Bills total 290.41.
