Sam Roberts shot his mother in law Mrs Wile and then killed his wife Lena Lewis before turning the pistol on himself on a Saturday night. The family tragedy at Fifteenth and Main unfolded after years of marital strife and a dying child. A neighbor found three bodies in one room. Lena survived long enough to signal her husband’s deed. Roberts, a 28 year old former railroad fireman, died from a self inflicted shot to the head. the two women were buried in Columbus, Kansas after an inquest.
