A 685 pound meteorite lies on the sidewalk before J. M. Anderson & Co's at 509 Main in Canon City. Brought from Cripple Creek, it is nearly all metal with about 90 percent iron and traces of nickel cobalt and possibly silver. Found near Toll Witcher's ranch on Wilson Creek, it likely broken from a larger object and landed after a flight through the air. Astronomers differ on origin, but such large specimens are valued though not by fixed standards.
The article notes all iron meteorites show similar analysis indicating a common origin. Messrs Witcher and Pope received many requests from eastern museums and education institutions seeking their find, but they will not part with it without compensation.
