Notorious forger Chas. B. Hogg sentenced to prison

Chas B Hogg also known as Benton Campbell and Thompson was sentenced by Judge M S Bailey of the district court to ten to fourteen years in the penitentiary for forging a 185 check on the First National Bank of Florence. He claimed birth in Scotland in 1844 and described a life of engineering, military service, and a long pattern of forgeries that may total around 750000. He admitted guilt and will be moved to the penitentiary Tuesday morning.

Santa Fe Railroad Upgrades Rails Between Here and Pueblo

The Santa Fe Railroad will replace current track with sixty five pound rails between here and Pueblo and make related track and roadbed improvements to reach first class condition. Local agent Mr Garrettcannot specify a start date but says work will begin soon and be pushed to rapid completion.

Mrs. Mary C. Harding Dies at 80 in Colorado Home

Mrs. Mary C. Harding aged 80 years and 7 months died Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock at the home of her son T. M. Harding 903 Allison Avenue after a lingering illness. Born January 30 1827 in Cincinnati Ohio she married Sebbius L. Harding July 31 1851 and died on the sixty second anniversary of their wedding. She came to Colorado in 1878 for her son's health and resided there afterward.

Pioneer Canon City resident dies after long business life

A Canon City woman who frequented Cincinnati for business and pleasure and helped form Harding Brothers, later Harding Hardware, died leaving three sons and eight grandchildren. Funeral service at her late home Thursday at 10 am conducted by Rev. Dr. B. E. Hart, with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

McDonald Bound Over On Theft Charge At Court

A. M. McDonald, longtime deliveryman for The Fair Mercantile Co., was bound over to the district court after a Squire Logan verdict of guilty on a charge of misappropriating firm funds. The case stemmed from money collected from patrons, with G. W. Tobin prosecuting. Bond set at two hundred dollars. McDonald, a husband and father, posted it. The rest of the report notes a Canon youth’s ill fated romantic tale involving an aunt’s twins.

City Council Approves 2500 for New Smelting Plant Site

The city council appropriated 2500 from public funds to back the purchase of a site and rail trackage for Tri-Bullion Smelting. 500 due on bond, 1000 in 12 months, 1000 in two years. Prospect Heights adds 800 and South Canon 500, about 200 to be raised publicly. The company bonds City two thirds, air time contingent, plans to begin smelter buildings within 30 days.

Local store robbery tied to camping trip plan

Roy Modie is in the county jail charged with robbing the Hadley Mercantile store in Florence of groceries and provisions for a camping trip to Gunnison country. Officers recovered seventy five to one hundred dollars of goods and a second arrest followed, with more suspects expected tonight or tomorrow.

Colorado Receives Forest Reserve Fund Share

Governor Harper received a letter from the agriculture secretary confirming a forest reserve funded distribution to Colorado.
