London observers label Lord Denning's Profumo scandal report a whitewash of Whitehall as Parliament braces for a new storm. More than 23,000 copies sold on the first day amid high public interest.
Lord Denning reviews rumours about ministers and public figures and finds no evidence of national security breaches. He says scandals are a marketable commodity, calls to curb trafficking in information, and notes Labour calls for early security debate while maintaining the Prime Minister bears ultimate responsibility for the security system.
France has won an order to supply the Australian Army with its first guided missiles, 100 Entac anti-tank weapons. The Minister for the Army, Mr. Cramer, will sign the order soon. The Entac is smaller, easier to handle, and portable, weighing 27 pounds and operable by crews in jeeps or by hand.
The Lord Mayor of Bris bane Alderman Clem Jones opened a three part Canberra lecture series to spur self-government discussion. The Canberra program is arranged by the ACT group of the Royal Institute of Public Administration. The next lecture by National Capital Development Commissioner J W Overall is set for October 24 at ANU Haydon-Allen Theatre.
Mr. Roberts, after days at Commonwealth Health Laboratories, will join a public health course in Sydney for Papua and New Guinea health assistants. He is noted for field surveys on leprosy and hookworm among natives and for speaking tribal languages. He attends a Canberra delegation to the Prime Minister seeking full Aboriginal rights. He leads the Northern Territory Council for Aboriginal Rights.
A Singapore telecommunications spokesman said telegraph circuits from Singapore to Djakarta would be restored tonight, resuming telephone service by morning. Officials gave no reason for the move as Indonesia remains tense over the Malaysia federation. Subandrio and others spoke of support to North Borneo, while Britain sought friendly relations with Indonesia.
The Auditor-General Mr Campbell tabled in Parliament noted a 1.5 million rise in poker machine tax revenue. Of this, 2,904,199 was allocated to the hospital fund and 375,000 to housing for the aged. Racing receipts rose to 2,790,412 despite five meetings washed out, and totalisator turnover climbed 192,864 to 14,072,557 largely from trotting and greyhound meetings at Harold Park. Liquor license returns reached 4,944,888 with 4,779,831 from fermented and spirituous liquors. Capital works expenditure did not follow usual revenue-proving expectations.
Mr. Ikeda's New Zealand wreath laying was rejected as controversy rages over his Canberra plans. Department of Internal Affairs official D. A. Johnston, in charge of arrangements, spoke after reporters pressed questions. Ikeda had just arrived in Jakarta from the Philippines and denied talk of a regional summit.
In Canberra debates yesterday Mr. J R Fraser alleged New South Wales wine producers issued an ultimatum to grocers to stop selling South Australian wines. NSW officials denied the claim. Murrayvale Wines manager Mr. Jirasec said many Canberra grocers would continue sales, while a critics group warned against cut price trading and outlined trade terms for October.
