Sydney reports the State Government will raise taxes on poker machines hotels and clubs and increase stamp duties on property sales and cheques. Motorists licences rise by one pound yearly and stamp duty applies to new car registrations and used car transfers. A Commonwealth grant of 3.044 million pounds will boost general revenue.
The Budget presented in the Legislative Assembly by Treasurer and Deputy Premier Mr Renshaw forecasts a £22,000 surplus on £202.5 million expenditure with new tax boosts lifting revenue to £504 million. Officials say expansion to avoid a potential £9-10 million deficit, while noting slower revenue recovery and past larger shortfalls.
The Commonwealth and States face a £6 million to £7 million budget gap even with a £3,044,000 grant. The government will treat the grant as general revenues to cover expenditures, with plans for a 2/6d levy on poker machines and a 1 percent rise in hotel and club licence fees to six percent, wine and spirit shop fees up from two percent. The U S defending yacht Weatherly defeated Australian challenger Gretel to retain the America's Cup for the New York Yacht Club. Weatherly won by three minutes and 40 seconds, its fourth win in five races of the best of seven series. A photo shows Weatherly crossing the finish line.
West German Foreign Ministry said Edward Heath told German leaders Britain would not alter the results of bargaining for entry into the Common Market. Heath added hopes for adapting market talks to Commonwealth wishes, following London's Commonwealth Prime Ministers Conference.
Canberra inspectors warn of dummy bidders acting for a builder company. They would bid to win leasehold blocks, have leases and plans in their names, and eventually transfer houses to the company after completion, circumventing the City Leases Ordinance and the department’s controls.
Governor Ross Barnett defied a Federal Court order to admit James Meredith to the University of Mississippi. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered Mississippi officials to refrain from interfering with Meredith’s registration, while Barnett pledged to resist integration and threatened arrest of Federal officials enforcing the court order.
Mr Fraser described the scheme as smacking of conspiracy and said he would share details with Mr Freeth. The Department plans to offer for lease early next month 46 restricted blocks located in Wat son Downer Lyncham and Jo Connor.

A Tiger Moth, the club’s sole aircraft, crashed during routine training near Lae. Both pilots, Alan Partridge and Raymond Vuilerman, escaped serious injury. Partridge was hospitalized with broken ribs and abrasions.
