Train services resumed in New South Wales Victoria and South Australia at midnight after a 24 hour stoppage by locomotive enginemen. The strike caused traffic congestion in three state capitals yesterday morning but most workers reached their jobs on time with absenteeism only slightly above normal.
About 4900 members of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Engine drivers stopped work at midnight in a dispute over higher margins and overtime. Trains like the Southern Aurora and Spirit of Progress left Sydney in a special timetable while road transport surged, with police managing heavy congestion. Melbourne and Sydney firms prepared for possible further action as unions pressed for doubled Sunday pay and eight hour shifts with overtime.
