Inquiry Board Blames Storm For Viscount Disaster

A board of inquiry led by Mr Justice Spicer blames a severe electric thunderstorm for the crash of an Ansett A N A Viscount into Botany Bay last November. Fifteen died, nine from Canberra. The report cites wing and tailplane failure after a rapid descent from 6500 feet, with turbulence and wing loading contributing to loss of control. The starboard outer wing separation in flight is treated as the immediate cause, based on tests and wreckage examination.
