Tumut Pond Dam Gates Closed By Prime Minister

Prime Minister Menzies pulled the switch to shut Tumut Pond Dam discharge gates. The 283 ft structure holds 43 000 acres of water and will serve irrigation in the Murray River valley. The Snowy scheme aims to supply NSW Victoria and SA with power and water.

Concrete arch dam completes Tumut River link

The 283 ft high concrete arch dam along the Tumut River was completed as water from Tumut and other streams will form a key link in the Snowy Mountains hydro electric project. Prime Minister Menzies closed the river outlet gates on Saturday to mark the ceremony.

Judge Postpones Deportation of Italian Migrant

In Adelaide a Supreme Court judge ordered writs of Habeas Corpus to challenge the deportation of 20 year old Italian migrant Francesco Tenuta. Tenuta was arrested by Immigration Department officers and jailed. hearing set for 10:30 a.m. in the Supreme Court in chambers. He previously pleaded guilty to illegal use of a motor vehicle at Waikerie and received six months prison term, partially remitted for good conduct.

Blasing Ship Abandoned After Collision in Gulf of Om

In the Gulf of Om 25 miles off, the Liberian vessel Melika of 20 551 tons and the French tanker Fernand Gilabert of 10 716 tons collided. Both ships burned. Melika abandoned with 21 casualties later taken aboard the aircraft carrier Bulwark. A Puma frigate helped ferry survivors and attempt fire control. Bulwark crews battled fires aboard both vessels.

French Socialists Likely To Back New Constitution

The Socialist Party faces pressure as 60 to 70 percent of voters seem certain to back De Gaulle's proposed constitution. While most parties support the plan, a minority of 37 Socialists signed a statement opposing it, citing party discipline concerns. Boat Rescues Injured Lighthouse Keeper on Tasman Island

The 18 foot fishing boat Erie braved 5 foot swells to rescue injured lighthouse keeper P. J. Fahey from Tasman Island on Tasmania's east coast. Fahey, 26, hurt his back in a Thursday fall. a doctor landed could not reach him at the landing place. He was lowered in a wicker stretcher to a 10 foot dinghy and taken to the Erie, then to Royal Hobart Hospital with a suspected spinal fracture.

Police Find Man Who Made Press Allegations

A man who vanished from Wiseman's Ferry Hotel after alleging police involvement in a tow away racket was reportedly found in the Parramatta district. He claimed to have paid police for tips and signed statements for Sydney papers, mentioning police officers and cheques.
