Young Melbourne painter wins Travelodge Art Prize
The 23-year-old Mel bourne painter Mr Fraser Fair won Australia’s top solo art award, the $7 500 Travelodge Art Prize for 1972, in his first public showing. He left RMIT last year with a fine arts diploma and has been painting professionally only months, selling one other work to Commonwealth official Mr James Mollison. Fair’s two works in the Canberra Parkroyal gallery exhibition competed with 17 invited artists including John Bruck Judy Cassab Ray Crooke Sali Herman and Frank Hodgkin.

Aborigine Rescued After Five Days In 100ft Well Near Port Hedland
Aborigine Johnny Sam, about 28, spent five days at the bottom of a 100ft well near Port Hedland, 900 miles north of Perth.
