Singapore faces growing strike tension after 17 trade union leaders were arrested. More than 50,000 workers are on strike with 40,000 more expected to join. Malaysian officials allege the arrests aimed to spark major riots and seize power.
Seven large Singapore trade unions call out 50 000 workers plus 9 000 at a Royal Navy base as talks with the government on deregistering unions break down. Police detain leaders of the United Front and heavy security rings the city as students petition City Hall and the prime minister contemplates intervention.
A 20 000 strong crowd marched through Kuala Lumpur denouncing President Soekarno as Communist while tearing up effigies and planning to burn them. In New York Philippines Secretary Salvador Lopez attacked Britain at the United Nations for ignoring Malaysia issue requests and pressuring will of Sarawak and Sabah.
