Britain is moving more Gurkha troops to strengthen border defences bringing total British strength in the area to six thousand. Meanwhile arrangements are made for Australian families to return to Djakarta despite Indonesian obstacles.
Reports indicate a sizeable force near the Indonesian border with Sarawak as Malay regiments move to new positions over the week. British intelligence questions Indonesian claims of a large enemy presence and notes unrest on the frontier.
The crisis deepens as Malaysian fishing vessels report incursions by Indonesian gunboats and ships seized or burned. Lord Carrington lands in Kuala Lumpur to meet Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman and defence chiefs, with talks about possible Commonwealth naval aid to protect Malaysian shipping.
A boy was trapped in an 8 inch wide drain in Wing. He faced downward with his legs twisted and was freed minutes before help arrived. He was admitted to Maier Hospital with a slight leg injury and later discharged.
A 29 year old Daley migrant died after leaping into a river to save Theo Wilbers of Canberra. Wilbers reached safety as currents swept both downstream toward rocks. Bystanders attempted artificial resuscitation for about half an hour before the man died at Community Hospital. Constable Oldroyd and Constable Rearing lead the inquiries.

President Kennedy announced the limited nuclear test ban treaty at the White House noting that its approval reduces fear and increases hope. He signed four copies to be deposited in London Moscow and Washington on Thursday when the pact takes effect.
Mr A R My Wingfield, secretary of the interior housing section, said the waiting list for homes and flats fell during the quarter. About 1,653 names were deleted and 477 new home applications were received, with 208 for flats. Permanent housing units stood at 8,965 with 123 temporary units available.

The Canberra bound birds from a Broken Hill race failed to return, with only one pigeon reaching Canberra by nightfall. Victor Kosorick of Tate Street OConnor owned the sole returning bird winning the s w add mile trophy after about 15 hours at an average speed near 38 mph.
