Gurkha troops and local security forces killed 26 Indonesian based terrorists in a battle in Sarawak Third Division. The clash began Saturday when militants overran a fortified settlement at Long Jai 35 miles inside the Sarawak border. Two Gurkhas were killed and one wounded.
Monday: Gurkhas and security forces rout terrorists, killing three. Tuesday: larger battle ends with heavy casualties. Indonesia moves border troops to Borneo to confront Malaysia amid ongoing Confrontation tensions. China pledges support while Philippines eyes trade impact. Local fishermen and workers face threats from alleged Indonesian gunboats.
National President A J Lee of the RSL outlined a broader role for the British Commonwealth Ex-Services League and affiliated groups. He spoke after attending the Ottawa conference September 15 22 about ensuring no veteran faces want and stressing collaborative effort across Commonwealth organizations.
Sir Garfield Barwick voiced concern over Indonesia at the United Nations General Assembly. A pilot and three wool buyers died when their plane crashed near a wool shed about 17 miles from Valda Downs Station. Named victims include John Peter, 35, of Petita Station, and Edward G. The U S State Department said a military coup occurred in Honduras and President Ramon Morales was reportedly ousted. Clashes between army troops and civil guards were reported with several deaths as air force planes circled the city and troops surrounded the presidential palace.
Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko said the United States and USSR may agree to ban nuclear weapons from spacecraft in orbit. He noted progress on narrowing gaps with U.S. and Britain in East West talks and anticipated no major breakthroughs but planned further planning on NATO multilateral nuclear forces.
Canberra retail stores will close at 11 30 am tomorrow and reopen Tuesday. Chemists Gray s Pharmacy and Leggett s Pharmacy are rostered for duty. Banks close today at 5 pm and reopen Tuesday at 10 am. Mail offices open Monday for one hour. Milk service continues. Front end garages open 7 am to 9 pm Monday. Bread will be delivered tomorrow but no fresh supply until Tuesday.
Canberra gazettes change to the city layout plan by the Minister for the Interior. University Avenue will cease to be a public thoroughfare from Kingsley Street to Clunies Ross Street in twelve days. Other changes include Dickson shopping centre road patterns Hughes Curtin and new Lake side drive north from Canberra Lake Dam to Clunies Ross Street.
