Heaviest fighting since hostilities began continues at Shanghai with a furious Japanese two-pronged assault. Chinese forces repelled preliminary shelling as they prepare for possible Yangtse advance and Shanghai defense remains pivotal amid broader Manchukuo tensions.
Sydney Trades and Labour Council approves a boycott of Japanese goods in protest against Japan's war in China. It urges a Europe wide move via the British Labour movement, calls for anti Japanese exports, and asks the ACTU and all Australian labour councils to mobilize in support of China.
Three hundred international insurers have agreed to exclude war related risks from policies issued in Britain and abroad. The move, prompted by aerial warfare and incendiary bombs, reflects a new standard for insurers and follows the 1886 agreement between British brokers and underwriters.

Signor Mussolini, reaching the Austro German frontier at 3 a.m., sent greetings to Hitler and said he was waiting to welcome him in Italy. The report notes Britain and France to be invited to send representatives to discuss Spain, though no meeting is set.
