Dollar area import easing outlined by McEwen

Australia plans to ease discrimination against imports from the dollar area while maintaining some controls. An additional 25 million pounds worth of imports will be licensed under a replacement quota system starting October 1 next year, with most new goods aimed at equipment and materials, and some shift between quota categories.

Road tragedies claim lives across two states

A string of fatal crashes leaves James Taylor and family among 20 dead nationwide. The 39 year old husband and his wife Kathleen Margaret and their two young daughters were killed when their car toppled on Mulgan Road near Cecil Park. In Sydney, two men died after a car struck pedestrians on Darlinghurst Parade. A teen driver, Albert Ainsworth, 22, died in a Paynesville area crash while several others were injured. A seven year old girl Natalie Dunstan died with her mother injured in Preston after a taxi collision. A five year old girl Susan Holmes perished when her car hit a telegraph post on the Hume Highway near Violet Town. her father was injured.

Elderly Man Helps In Chiff Rescue

Sydney report: 76 year old James Smith of Watsons Bay clung to a badly injured woman 70 feet above rocks at The Gap. He slid 30 feet down the E face to reach her after she toppled from the brink and held on until police cliff rescue squad arrived. The woman, with fractures to leg pelvis and ankle and internal injuries, was later taken to St Vincent’s Hospital. her condition tonight is listed as fair.

Missing man feared drowned in Murrumbidgee River near Cotter

Canberra police searched the Murrumbidgee River near the Cotter Pumping Station for three hours after a man named Alexander Basileo, 20, a labourer from Narrabundah, disappeared from a party at about 4 15 pm. The dive team faced muddy water and strong currents and the search was halted at dusk with plans to resume at daylight.

Life saver mauled by shark at Fairhaven coast

Fitzroy surf lifesaver Christopher Holland 1 year old was mauled by a shark at Fairhaven on Wis chn’s Western coast afternoon. He belonged to the Fairhaven Lifesaving Club and was rushed to Seelong Hospital by Lorne ambulance for emergency surgery. Hospital authorities said tonight he passed the critical stage but remained in serious condition.
