Fourteen chambers refused an extension of trading hours while about 150 chambers affiliated with the NSW Chambers of Commerce sent delegates to a meeting. Delegates passed these resolutions.
A cool southerly breeze swept New South Wales lowering highs from near century temperatures. Mt Cessnock reached 98 while Sydney topped 94, eight degrees down after the front arrived. Thunderstorms preceded the change and a public opinion poll on extended shopping hours is proposed by chambers.
A Moscow Radio commentator condemned Australia’s defence programme as counter to national and international interests. The broadcast warned of increased Army strength and a larger SEATO role while accusing BBC of misrepresenting Australian policy. Police resumed the hunt for 20 year old Ales sandro Basileo missing since Sunday near the Mourrum bidgee River pumping station. Five officers led by Senior Constable Hough searched the water yesterday from dawn to late afternoon with help from friends and Basileo's parents at the scene.

The Postal Workers Union in Sydney plans industrial action and a possible nationwide strike if a 28 percent wage margin increase, tied to the Metal Trades Award, is not made operative by December. The move follows similar demands by miners and other unions, threatening delays in Christmas mail and greetings nationwide.
