A plan to move substantial numbers of public servants to Canberra sparked a major clash between the Government and peak union councils. Details slated for release next week, unions claim the move aids election prospects of ACT Liberal parliamentarians. Talks broke down as the Public Service Board refused to disclose details below Federal executive level.
Japan Airlines and Qantas proposed an excursion fare at an IATA conference in Cannes that would cut Australia to Japan round trips by up to 623 dollars from April next year. The new fare would add to the existing 1400 economy return and cost about 892 in season and 877 off-season if approved by both governments.
The Treasurer Mr Lynch announced a new Australian Savings Bonds series with a 9.25 percent rate, a 0.5 percentage point cut, aimed at easing private sector liquidity. Opposition figures decried the move as electioneering, predicting further cuts, while government ministers defended it as a consequence of sound policy.

About 172 demonstrators were arrested in Brisbane during a three hour rally in King George Square over the ban on street marches. Police in plain clothes and riot batons blocked an attempted march along Albert Street as about 600 protesters linked arms and faced a wall of police.
Canberra coroner Mr Daiier ruled the August blaze at the Indian High Commission Chancery in Red Hill was likely started intentionally. He noted evidence points to deliberate ignition, but the culprits remain unknown as police pursue leads linked to threats from Ananda Marga affiliates and other witnesses testifying at the inquiry.
