Becker gift to Australian Academy of Science boosts research funding
J Becker of Smithfield Pastoral Company and his associate announced two major donations to the Australian Academy of Science totaling £300,000 to pay debts and fund future science work. Two Die In Ship Collision In Houston Canal
In the Houston Ship Canal a collision between the Norwegian tanker Berean and the Union Reliance, a Nationalist Chinese freighter, left two seamen dead and at least 25 injured or missing. The blaze trapped crews aboard the freighter and tugs initially tried to move the vessels but withdrew due to intense flames. All crew of the tanker were rescued, and Coast Guard craft with Baytown emergency services responded to the scene.
