Eleven trapped miners reach surface after a two week underground confinement in West Germany. They were brought up in a slim metal capsule, their faces pale but in good general condition, marking one of history’s great mining rescues.
Jubilant escape as Heine Kull and 10 other miners emerge after a 195 foot underground ride. Doctors attend as crowd cheers. 11 ambulances stand by and a mobile operating theater aids the rescue. The men, once presumed dead, are helped from capsules and stretchered to hospitals.
Peking editorial marking the 46th anniversary of the Russian Revolution quotes the Peoples Daily stating China will unite with the Soviet Union and fight shoulder to shoulder with the great Soviet people.
