Australia faces a shift in policy as opposition leader Calwell outlines Labour aims to defend Malaysia expand the armed forces and deliver sustained growth. He pledges no booms and busts and forecasts 54 percent economic growth under Labour.
Mr Calwell defended Labour defence policy as sound and nationalist, pledging to honour treaty obligations in war. He outlined plans for education, health, housing, and economic growth, including free public medical service, a national health system, increased scholarships, and a large housing push. He urged negotiation of a public treaty for Malaysia and warned of actions if aggression occurred._CONTINUED_PAGE_9
Workmen began erecting the final 41 bronze honour scrolls at the Australian War Memorial. The scrolls list 99,469 Australians who died on active service across six wars, completing the eastern cloisters beside the Pool of Reflection. Western cloisters already hold 641,521 names from World War I. The memorial director Major J J McCrrath announced the last bronze scrolls will cover six wars.
Archbishop Mannix dies after collapse at Raheen aged nearly 100. He marked fifty years as a bishop last year and would have turned 100 on March 4. Leaders including Robert Menzies and Arthur Calwell paid tribute as Card Sims and Dr Woods sent condolences. Vatican report notes prayers by over 2,000 bishops.
Pato Rahman aged 51 collapsed while discussing Malaysia's foreign policy at a luncheon hosted by the Australia Asian Association of Victoria. Three doctors assisted before ambulance transport to St Vincent's and Lord Casey hospitals. He died about two hours later with his wife beside him. Governor of Victoria attended.
Sir Robert refused a national or local Canberra Day holiday citing present circumstances after inquiries into the Canberra Day Celebrations Committee proposal. Mr T W Pye voiced disappointment but kept open the option for future years. Invitations for pioneers function pending months of planning and a baby competition may be added if promoted. Dato Suleiman served as Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, and external affairs minister Sir Garfield Barwick lamented the death of Dato Rahman.
