Reports from Santiago estimate nearly 6,000 dead or missing after a massive Chilean earthquake and tsunamis. Cities like Caldera and Talcahuano suffer heavy damage as new lakes appear and avalanches sweep the Andes. Rescue efforts continue amid fuel and food price controls and Olympic funds redirected for relief.
Mr Jim Fraser urged quick cheap housing in Canberra with 3 new specs and no built in cupboards or front screens. He stressed cost reductions must not mar appearance and cautioned about lack of backyard taps. H T Blair of the Trades and Labour Council warned against too cheap housing despite demand.
An abnormal 20ft tide battered Southport Main Beach washing out a retaining wall and threatening about a dozen homes. Two homes perched on a 30 foot drop into surf. Severe erosion also reported at Surfers Paradise and isolated Burleigh Currumbin areas.
Two boys Stephen and Andrew Hall of Bailey Place Yarralumla were injured in a car rollover on a sandy track six miles from Tharwa while on a motor picnic with their parents. Canberra ambulancemen treated them for minor head injuries.
