Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies said Canberra would become a centre of education and affairs of the spirit with the Australian National University growing in importance. He asserted the capital would advance rapidly and expand beyond commerce to attract minds and interest.
Sir Robert opened the Dominican Sisters Teachers College in Watson, Australia’s first national Catholic teachers college costing £250000. He urged Canberra to grow as a hub of church influence, universities, and schools, stressing government support for education and the need for skilled teachers.
Arch bishop Dr Eris O'Brien announced that Canberra will host the Australian headquarters for the Dominican priests. They plan to establish a house of theology beside the new Dominican Sisters teachers' training college in Watson, which now serves as the Dominican Sisters' Australia headquarters. A school for seven children is planned near the college this year.
About 1000 worshippers from the Anglican Diocese Canberra and Goulburn attended a praise service in Goulburn at St Saviours Cathedral marking the diocese centenary. The two day synod will involve 70 clergy and 160 lay representatives from 48 parishes with speeches by church leaders including Archbishop H R Gough and Bishop J Clements.
The Canberra Chamber of Commerce leader Mr. R. P. Greenish criticizes government plans to curb growth and urges a rethink of land and housing policy. He warns that housing shortages could trigger explosive growth in surrounding regions and calls for stronger leasing rules and citizen participation.
The House meets at 3 30 pm while the Senate starts next week as parliament returns from a long recess. Key topics include defence and security, economy slackness, unemployment, the U S naval radio station in Western Australia, press interview bans and lifts, trade practices, federation concerns, and possible election this year with Labour critics urging earlier sessions. The Opposition leader Calwell faces calls to campaign on the ALP decision on the station, while Holt and Hart defend government stance and warn against political misjudgment.
Dennis Neville Rourke, 12, of Hannon's Road Narwee, was swept about ten miles through a storm water channel from Beverly Hills to Bexley North after slipping into fast water while walking with Harold Rowley. A passing motorist alerted help and rescuers pulled him from weeds and debris to safety.
Dramatic rescue near Sydney as surf clubs from Newport Bigola Avalon converge to save 20 lifeguards and two board riders after a rescue boat was driven onto rocks by huge waves and a 6 ft shark circulated the area. The operation lasted nearly a day with lines snapping and a strong rip pulling craft offshore.
