President Kennedy toured West Berlin amid huge crowds and barrier blocks near Checkpoint Charlie. He urged reconciliation and arms-control talks while highlighting the city’s divided fate and Europe’s future.
Sir Robert and Dame Pattie Menzies hosted a lunch at Kensington Palace where Australian silver candlesticks were presented to Princess Alexandra. A spokesman said she was delighted by the gift, placed in a mahogany case and engraved with the Australian Coat of Arms, reproducing a 1761 George II set.
Sydney police heighten efforts in the Monica Schofield case with six additional senior detectives. The body of Monica was found buried off a rough track and identified by her father, Jeffrey Schofield, at the city morgue amid an intensive nationwide manhunt. An identikit of a man who accosted a woman at Hammondville last week is nearly ready, matching an earlier attack on a six year old girl. Police will not release the image until confirmed.
The National Capital Development Commission awarded a £1,739,179 contract to E. S. Clementson Pty Ltd for the Australian National Mint production building in Canberra. A £145,942 contract funded a new Civic telephone exchange. Plans show a two storey mint building in West Deakin near Cotter Road with landscaping for a 60,000 resident area. The Mint is slated for completion by November 1964 with production starting gradually from early 1964 and full integrated operation by year end. Police pursue abduction murder case of Monica Schofield with intensive search and public warnings to supervise children.
Detectives arrested a man aged 3 on a charge of carnal knowledge of a 15 year old girl. Det. C E Kent and Det. R I Pight made the arrest in O Connor. He is set to appear at the Canberra Court of Petty Sessions this morning.
A West German military plane crashed near Demtold between Augustdorf and Haustenbeck, about 100 miles east of the Belgian border. Eight paratroopers jumped to safety. survivors include a man with a broken leg. The aircraft exploded after the plunge from about 750 feet in clear weather, with rescue teams at the scene and reports it may have carried munitions.
Attorney General Robert Kennedy told Congress that grave doubts about American democracy would remain unless Negroes gain more civil rights. He testified as the first witness before the House Judiciary Committee on the omnibus civil rights bill, acknowledging the widespread complexity of racial discrimination. He urged a broad, rapid attack to achieve a solution as soon as possible.
