Government unveils 56 million defence program to build more ships and homes for the forces. The Defence Act enables Citizens Military Forces to serve overseas in non war conditions and establishes voluntary defence emergency reserves across three services.
The Army's Chief of the General Staff Sir John Wilton will visit South-East Asia this month, flying to Singapore June 2 to meet Far East Land Forces and Australian instructors in Vietnam, then Malaysia June 25 to inspect artillery units and Borneo troops before returning to Australia June 30.
Australia plans a six point defence and aid package amid fresh overseas commitments. The measures include expanding CMF allowances and pay, overseas service for volunteers, more Army instructors in Vietnam, and faster recruitment to reach 28,000 Army strength. Government projects a multiyear build up with new bridges and airfields in Borneo, plus additional ships and missiles.
Indonesian forces begun withdrawing from Malaysian Borneo with 32 armed personnel seen near Pangkalam Ammo at 6:15 pm. Talks between Malaysia Philippines and Indonesia followed a two hour session led by Sukarno, Macapagal, and Tunku Abdul Rahman as leaders met to discuss peace and potential concessions.
G M Holden posted a record £19,061,791 profit for 1963, the highest ever by an Australian private company. Net sales rose to £177,169,666, with 183,897 vehicles sold and 22,664 employees. Export earnings topped £5.9 million as Holden maintained its sales leadership while planning a 200,000 unit annual production target for 1966.
Rain washed out the first day of the second Test at Lords. If weather clears, the damp surface is seen as a haven for pace and seam bowlers, potentially aiding both England and Australia.
A head on collision about 9:45 pm three miles south of Brodbo killed Mark Robinson 82 a Willow Glen resident. Injured were Rev Fr J Butz Chakola Nelson Frederick James Robinson and Stanley Robinson. Bishop J N Cullinane suffered multiple injuries and was listed as fairly satisfactory. The crash occurred as both cars travelled to a regional Monaro priests’ meeting in Cooma.
