New South Wales May Join National Roads Scheme

The Federal Capital Commission will launch an extensive tree planting program this season along streets avenues and around public buildings in the city. Thousands of young trees will line roads allotments and work camps including grounds at Hotels Ainslie Acton Kurrajong Wellington Beauchamp House Brassey House National Library and Post Office. The Duke and Duchess of York planted trees during their Canberra visit forming the nucleus of ten coppices to be planted this season alongside other groups yet unfitted with trees.

Eastlake Mothercraft Centre Opens in Canberra

The Canberra Mothercraft Society led months of effort to fund and establish the Eastlake Health Centre. Volunteers raised over £300 for equipment, a cottage was provided by the Federal Capital Commission near Eastlake Shopping Row, with Slater Whiting as nurse in charge. The centre offers daily consulting hours and home visits to mothers and babies.

New road opened in Industrial Area linking to Civic Centre

A road provisionally named Thoad A1S opened for traffic in the Industrial Area connecting to the Civic Centre. The 1100 yard route features a 125 foot wide roadway with a 65 foot plantation on the western side and a narrow garden on the eastern side. Seven industrial leases were developed along the avenue, six in use, with plans for 23 industries and a Civic Centre Post Office at the southern end.
