Wharf Leave Effective from Today
The Minister for Labour Mr McMahon announced royal assent for the long service leave scheme. It grants three months’ leave after 20 years and 60 weeks per decade thereafter, with immediate cash benefits for men over 70 and optional current benefits for those over 65. The Waterside Workers Federation opposed it citing penalties and elder care concerns. McMahon attacked the Communist Party for undermining elderly workers and defended arrangements allowing some elderly men to continue working as irregulars.
