A federal ALP conference will be held in Canberra on March 18 to confirm Labour policy on defence and foreign policy. The meeting is expected to reaffirm a nuclear free Southern Hemisphere and discuss internal dissent over the US plan for a 40 million pound communications centre in Western Australia.
Federal Secretary F E Chamberlain announced a Canberra meeting of the Foreign Affairs Standing Committee to prepare a report for the Federal Executive. The Sydney emergency conference aimed to curb Labour Party’s alleged nuclear free zone rhetoric, with discussions on defence and foreign affairs amid speculation on Australia’s multilateral policy.
A 51 year old first officer of the Cuban freighter Rio Damaji sought political asylum in Hamburg saying he did not wish to live under the Castro regime. Police reported he acted alone and gave no further details.
G C Fisher supervisor and D J Rees foreman restore a 1926 Bean car for the Canberra Day procession. The vehicle, once idle in a shed for over 30 years, is linked to Frank Birtles the Australian motoring pioneer who drove the first overland England to Australia journey in 1928.

Government established the committee earlier this month to enquire into economy trends.
Two men died when a petrol tank exploded after a head on collision on the Brisbane Valley Highway near Moore Queensland. The men escaped the wrecked truck with minor injuries before the fuel explosion incinerated them while they stood beside the vehicle.
Mr. Llewellyn at the Canberra Youth Music Group meeting urged permanent backing for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Canberra recitals and argued Canberra lacks a proper concert hall. He noted the absence of ANU music departments and a college of music hampers youth musical education and national curriculum expansion.
Top Class Mr Llewellyn praised Australia’s concert presentation as up to world standards but urged more variety in musical activities. He noted conservatory tuition is hampered by limited facilities and that government subsidies support Australian music making less than in the United States. He called for enduring sponsorship seen in the US and Europe.
