The Commonwealth increased its housing grant by 2.3 million after a day of wrangling with the Government and State Premiers over funds to relieve unemployment. States will receive a special rent of 7.5 million for housing for the rest of the financial year. The Commonwealth also cut local government borrowing to 7.5 million this year.
A heated conference reveals clashes between the Commonwealth and premiers over grants for housing and self government. NSW argues it bears the highest unemployment and seeks more funds to stimulate employment and industry. Other states receive adjusted allocations to address persistent joblessness.

The Navy will provide a guard for the opening of Partin cuca next Tuesday. Minister for the Navy Senator Gorton said about 150 officers and men would parade for the ceremonial opening, drawing sailors from HMAS Watson and Nosea Albatross. A Royal Guard of 96 men and a Nosy band of about 40 musicians will participate.
In Algiers Belcourt and Oran districts mobs killed 18, wounded 26, as French troops and police fired on rioters. A French officer died and five soldiers were hurt. Bomb explosions in Arab quarters frightened residents while officials eyed peace talks near the Swiss border amid renewed hopes for a cease-fire within weeks.
The number of registered unemployed rose by 15,264 in the month, with the Prime Minister Menzies reporting the figure to premiers to discuss special grants. Unemployment reached 3.1 percent overall, up from December, with rises across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia. TheJanuary totals by state include NSW 47,000 and Queensland 30,804.
