A violent electrical storm struck the central coast of New South Wales today, killing a man and a child. The storm ripped down walls and power lines, toppled trees and signposts, unroofed houses and factories, and flooded low-lying properties with winds reaching high speeds and heavy rain.
A severe thunderstorm lashed Sydney causing power outages as lines felled, chimneys toppled, and glass shattered in George Street. One man died after being struck by lightning at Fort Kembla. several workers and bystanders were treated for injuries while authorities warned of blocked roads and delayed trains.
A commission outlined a new Stone of Hemera memorial to war dead. Tenders are sought this week for the stone. The monument will be built near an approach leading to the memorial, with funding earmarked.
The Third Australian Soil Science Conference opened last night at the Academy of Science with Governor-General Lord De Lisle Centre among the attendees. Left to right in a photograph are Dr. W. F. White and Chief?
The State Premier Mr Heffron pledged a plan to save Captain's Flat from becoming a ghost town after the Lake George Mine closure. He proposed an all weather 25 mile road from Captain's Flat to Queanbeyan costing about £150,000 with cost sharing among state local and federal governments. The deputation led by Mr B C McKeon urged the link to aid 450 mine workers and others as more jobs vanish.
Viscount De Lisle presided as more than 200 delegates gathered for a six day Australian Soil conference at the Academy of Science Hall. He urged scientists to pursue faster fertility gains suited to Australia’s climate and economy while guarding against greed and haste that could harm the land.
Sir Victor Windeyer will administer the oath to 124 members of the House of Representatives in the Commonwealth's 24th Parliament. The Governor-General Viscount De L'Isle will open Parliament next Tuesday with a morning swearing-in before the afternoon opening ceremony.
Police used tear gas and charged European and Moslem demonstrators as 44 plastic bombs rocked Oran at dawn. A European youth was killed. the toll rose to nine dead and 16 wounded in Algiers and Oran amid renewed protests. Franco Algerian peace talks near the Swiss border were interrupted to report to Paris and Tunis.
More than 200 volunteers battled a fast spreading fire in Southern New South Wales threatening houses and a shopping centre. Crews from nearby towns fought high winds to protect crops and a pear and apple harvest as the blaze raged near Butlow and Tuggerah.
