A Russian diplomat, Ivan Skriupov, is asked to leave Australia and is expected to depart Canberra early next week. Canberra authorities allege elaborate preparations linked to espionage and state security, prompting a nationwide manhunt for the suspect.
A balding gray haired man linked to espionage was identified from a passport photo found by an Australian woman agent. The government seeks Skripov and wife expulsion. Moscow has not responded. Security sweep targets three aims: Woomera, political intelligence, and American secrets.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh toured the Horse of the Year show at Epsom Showgrounds in Auckland unseen, with 11 000 spectators filing in. Gisborne owner Mr G Hansen won the title with Saba Sam as the royal pair applauded a parade of 380 ponies and hunters. They later sail toward Mount Maunganui Tauranga and Na pier, arriving Sunday.
Tehran dispatch says Iraqi Army and Air Force rebelled against the Assem regime. Rebels claim Bagdad radio had Kassem captured or retired and planes bombed the Defence Ministry. Support reportedly comes from Nasser era allies and other military units.
The National Capital Development Commission placed a Civic Centre plaque for Queen Elizabeth II's 1954 visit, nine days before her Royal arrival. The marker at Northbourne Avenue and London Circuit proclaims Canberra greeted the first reigning British monarch to Australia. A spokesman said the Queen would inspect the plaque in nine days, with no reason given for the long delay.
Russian diplomat Mr. Ivan Skripovy, accused of espionage preparations and banished from Australia, showed anger yesterday when press cars blocked the entrance to his Elliott Street home in Campbell, tooting his horn as the photo was taken.
Police say Tony Robinson 16 died from a gunshot at 9 a.m. near the Best. The Bank of New South Wales Kingston branch manager, of Coranderrra Street Reid, was found with a revolver nearby. He died at Canberra Hospital at 12 45 p.m.
The Australian National University reportedly paid £40000 for the Schreinerhof Motel on Northbourne Avenue to provide extra accommodation for students. About 24 women students would move in soon, with capacity rising to about 30. The institution already owns Bruce Hall and Lennox House and plans a new wing at Bruce Hall. The motel will be renamed and become an annexe to Bruce Hall about one mile away.
The National Capital Development Commission outlines a two stage project in the Parliamentary triangle. A seven or eight storey secretariat and a six storey Bureau of Census block will be erected on sites bounded by Commonwealth Avenue Parkes Place King George Crescent and King Edward Terrace. First stage due by end of next year with completion around June 1965.
