In happier days the Minister for External Affairs Sir Garfield Barwick and the First Secretary of the Soviet Embassy Mr Skripov spoke at a diplomatic reception late last year. Yesterday Sir Garfield requested that Mr Skripov leave the country.
Crowds along the Auckland streets surged as the Queen and the Duke toured the Domain. Police formed lines to keep the throng from the royal car, women fainted, ambulances cleared faces, and en route entourage members were pressed by the crowd.
The minister announced the government’s decision after a woman counter-espionage agent helped gather evidence against Skripow. Documents described espionage activities across three capitals and photographs of equipment and meetings. Skripow allegedly gifted the agent money and £425 in notes after attempts to place her on a diplomatic mission.
A bus carrying about 13 Maori passengers home from treaty celebrations plunged 200 feet after veering from a hill road near Whangareri. At least 15 died, several injured, with two others missing. The disaster occurred about 1:05 pm, amid heavy tragedy recalling a 1953-54 spate of transport calamities.
