Bookmakers Seek Deferment of Solicitor in Melbourne
Seven bookmakers petitioned the Supreme Court to strike Newton J Francia of Melbourne from the roll of barristers and solicitors. They allege racing debts around £4110 between December 1980 and January 5 1981 and failure to meet obligations. A prior 18 month earlier bid was refused. Affidavits claim jockeys were bribed by bookmakers not to win. The application was refused again.

Devanny Case Validity of Crimes Act Upheld
Interviewed yesterday on the High Court decision upholding the appeal of Francis Harold Devanny publisher of Worker Weekly against conviction for soliciting subscriptions for an unlawful association. Attorney General said the ruling rests on facts, not law, noting Devanny was charged under Section 201 of the Crimes Act 1934. The Court found subscriptions linked to an anti war demonstration rather than the Communist Party, leaving the law’s validity unaffected.
