Mortar fire from the Indian Gurkha camp of the United Nations sparked fighting with Katangan forces at FUSABETHVILLE Elisabethville. The city began to empty as workers fled their jobs amid the clash.
Reports from Leopoldville and Elisabethville describe Katangan plans to attack UN and local forces.UN and Irish troops prepare defenses as roadways to Kipushi and Jadotville are cut, with fighting at the airport and city center and communications disrupted.
Police say two more bodies recovered a day after the Ansett-ANA Viscount wreck near Mascot Airport. Fifteen aboard—eleven passengers and four crew—died when the plane crashed en route to Canberra. Search for wreckage continued through the day with divers and RAN ships Kimbla and Walrus aiding.
Nehru reports China refuses to accept the McMahon Line and may move south of it. China accuses India of airspace violations while India widens military posts in Ladakh and central regions. A 31 year old man, joiner Charles Gill of Derrima Street Queanbeyan, drowned at Oaks Estate after entertaining his wife Christine and three children with a swim near Chinaman's bridge. Gill warned the family to stay in shallow water before venturing into deeper water and sinking. Two passers by and Canberra police performed resuscitation but he died at Canberra Community Hospital. Gill, his family recently arrived from interstate eight weeks ago, had earlier reported stomach pains. The Molonglo River was running strongly after heavy rains.
Police interview a youth as part of investigation into September fire that destroyed Civic Telephone Exchange. Damage estimated at £500,000 disrupted Northside service. replacement completed last month with temporary exchanges from across states.
President Kennedy yesterday created a new military medal for armed forces personnel in Cold War operations. He named it the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for personnel facing armed opposition or imminent threat during operations occurring prior to July 1988.
London reports that Jacqui Chan was offered a speaking part as a handmaiden in Cleopatra but declined after a princess turned it down. The diary claims Elizabeth Taylor’s co star role went to Chan though the part was not speaking.
