UN Aids Katanga Crisis After Elizabet hville Airport Shootout

A UN spokesman said Katanga authorities ordered gendarmes to camps as tension rose in Elisabethville. Reports said Swedish, Norwegian, Italian, and Armenian travelers were detained or missing while the UN pressed for confined troops and possible action to restore order near the Katangan capital. An Indian officer noted a shooting incident near the airport after intoxicated Katanga guards assaulted a woman.

Army Chief to Visit Indonesia for 40 Day Tour

Lieutenant General Sir Reginald Pollard will-led a 40 day visit to Indonesia beginning next week. He and Lady Pollard are to arrive in Jakarta Sunday to meet Indonesian Defence Minister General Nasution. The visit follows a prior visit to the Australian Government.

New Inquiry Into Murder Adjourned In NSW Case

Mr Justice Dunphy adjourned the murder trial of Daniel Norris Nicholls 45, cook of Mulwala House, to February 19 next year after counsel requested more time for investigations into the death of Miss Beverley Irving Keys 28, hotel receptionist, at Gerrilong Crardens Red on September 22. The Crown and defense debated investigations and preparation, with Nicholls’ counsel seeking a thorough inquiry while the court granted time for the defense.

Four more bodies recovered from Mascot Viscount crash

Divers recovered four more bodies from the Mascot air crash scene. Two were near the wreckage, one inside, and part found on the seabed. The total confirmed dead rises to 15 including four crew. Authorities salvage wreckage parts as investigations focus on possible wing defect.

Appeal Urges Proper Voting for Senate Election

Mr Ley urged all voters to avoid informal ballots as 29 050 Australians spoiled their Senate votes in 1958. He warned the senate fight hinges on winning 17 seats and 806 261 extra votes could decide the outcome next Saturday. He advised marking first preference and continuing to rank all candidates. Hundreds of Torres Strait Islanders will vote for the first time with seven new polling places.
